Xbox CSO Matthew Ball Addresses Project Helix Future

Xbox CSO Matthew Ball addresses the impact of a global component crisis on Project Helix and the shift back to console exclusives.

During a live chat with The Game Business at Summer Game Fest 2026, Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball addressed the challenges facing the division. Following a 50% price hike for Game Pass Ultimate that led to a decline in subscribers, Xbox is returning to an exclusives-focused strategy to rebuild its core console business. A component crisis driving up RAM and storage costs is forcing Microsoft to rethink its console model and the upcoming Project Helix hardware, though the company remains committed to shipping the device. Ball, recruited by Asha Sharma to determine if the situation is fixable, noted that the crisis may have acute effects for 2 to 2.5 years. Despite years of declining hardware sales, current Xbox demand exceeds supply capabilities as the company navigates these market pressures.
