Nintendo Evaluating Switch 2 OLED for 2028 Launch

Nintendo is considering a Switch 2 OLED model for a potential 2028 release, pending a financial feasibility study of the display costs.

A South Korean display analyst reports that Nintendo is evaluating the financial feasibility of a Switch 2 handheld console featuring an OLED display. If deemed viable, development is slated to begin in late 2026, with mass production targeted for late 2027 and a market launch in early 2028. Samsung Display is the likely supplier for the rigid OLED panel, which would replace the 1080p LCD panel currently used in the Switch 2. While the LCD is significantly cheaper, Nintendo is already facing rising production costs; tight supplies of NAND Flash and DRAM have increased the Switch 2 cost by approximately $50, effective September 1, 2026. This potential upgrade follows the pattern of the first-generation Switch, which evolved from a 6.2-inch 720p LCD to a 7-inch 720p OLED SKU.
