Study Analyzes 12 Years of Hard Drive Failures

A new IEEE study of 443,156 enterprise drives reveals that HGST and WD models significantly outperform Seagate and Toshiba in longevity.

Researchers Christoph Siemroth and Yeomyung Park published a peer-reviewed IEEE study analyzing 12 years of Backblaze data. The report examined 443,156 enterprise hard drives and 1.66 million drive-years from 2013 through Q2 2025 to determine failure rates.

The data shows HGST and WD drives fail at 41% and 52% of Seagate's rate, respectively, when matched for age and temperature. Conversely, Toshiba drives fail at 107% of Seagate's rate, with monthly failures quadrupling after 60 months of active service.

Environmental factors significantly impact longevity, as each additional degree Celsius increases failure rates by 2.1%. While 146,943 drives exited the set without failing, only 0.52% lasted over ten years, highlighting the limits of enterprise hardware.
