Windows 11 Hidden Feature Manages Unified Memory

Microsoft's new IntelligentCarveout tool allows users to manually allocate system RAM for AI and gaming on unified-memory hardware.

Microsoft's Windows 11 build 29648.1000, released August 17, contains a hidden feature called IntelligentCarveout. While not in the official patch notes, code strings suggest this tool allows users to manually allocate memory within unified system pools.

The feature targets devices without dedicated GPUs, such as Macs, laptops, and handhelds, which share memory between system and graphics tasks. Users could reserve specific amounts of unified RAM for AI-heavy applications or gaming to optimize performance.

This is particularly relevant for unified-memory hardware like Nvidia's RTX Spark platform, which offers up to 128GB of LPDDR5x memory. While slower than the RTX 5090's 32GB of GDDR7 VRAM, IntelligentCarveout provides granular control over these large pools.
