Valve to Fix Premature Steam Machine Red Light

Valve is readying a BIOS update for the Steam Machine to address premature red light warnings by raising temperature thresholds to 100°C.

Valve has confirmed that the Steam Machine's red light bar warning is triggering prematurely and is preparing a BIOS fix to address the issue. Currently, the warning activates at 95 degrees Celsius for the CPU and 90 degrees Celsius for the GPU, but the upcoming update will raise both thresholds to 100 degrees Celsius. This follows reports from users like Redditor Pure-Outcome-5977, who observed the warning light while system monitors showed temperatures as low as 81 degrees Celsius for the CPU and 71 degrees Celsius for the GPU. According to Steam Support, the device, which features a custom mobile-tuned 30W CPU, only begins performance throttling at 100 degrees Celsius and is designed to shut down for protection if temperatures exceed that mark, with the CPU specifically configured for a self-protect shutdown at 105 degrees Celsius. Users facing the "Red Line of Death" can currently utilize a CMOS reset procedure as a temporary resolution.
