Huawei Builds DRAM Plant to Secure Memory Supply

Huawei is partnering with the Chinese government and Swaysure to build a 12-inch wafer memory plant, targeting 140,000 DRAM units monthly.

Huawei is establishing its own memory manufacturing facility to secure a stable DRAM supply chain, moving beyond its traditional role as a fabless semiconductor manufacturer. Supported by the Chinese government and DRAM maker Swaysure, the new plant is designed for 12-inch wafers and aims for an initial mass production capacity of 140,000 wafers per month. The facility will focus on producing 28nm DRAM. To lead the initiative, Huawei has recruited a former TSMC director as CEO and a former Elpida executive as a strategist. This move comes as Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron currently dominate 95 percent of the global memory market. Meanwhile, other shifts in the industry include Apple testing memory chips from CXMT as Chinese firms expand their presence.
