Modos Labs Founder Turns E-Ink Kit Into Game Boy

Wenting Zhang converts the M5Stack PaperS3 into a 60Hz e-ink Game Boy emulator using the ESP32-S3 microcontroller's dual-core power.

Wenting Zhang, founder of Modos Labs, has transformed the M5Stack PaperS3 development kit into a functional Game Boy emulator. Despite the device being discontinued by its manufacturer, the Paper Boy S3 software is now available via the M5Burner tool. The project leverages the ESP32-S3 microcontroller, utilizing one CPU core for emulation while the second handles audio processing and dithering. The 960x540 e-ink display achieves a 60Hz refresh rate, significantly scaling the original Game Boy's 160x144 resolution. Hardware features include a piezo buzzer for audio output and touchscreen buttons for quick-save and quick-load functions. The emulator also supports partial Bluetooth LE controller connectivity for input. This conversion demonstrates the high-performance potential of the dual-core ESP32-S3 in driving specialized e-ink applications.
