Apple watchOS 27 Drops Support for Older Models

Apple's watchOS 27 requires a Series 9 or newer, dropping support for older models to power on-device AI and Siri features.

At WWDC 2026, Apple announced watchOS 27, narrowing hardware support to models with the S9-SiP or newer. Starting September 2026, updates require an Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, or SE 3. This reduces supported generations from five to three, dropping the Series 8 and older. The shift enables on-device Siri and local AI workouts via the S9-SiP's Neural Engine. While iOS 27 supports the 2019 iPhone 11, users must update their iPhone to iOS 27 before installing the watchOS 27 developer beta. Public betas launch in July 2026. Older watches will still receive security updates and can pair with iOS 27 devices. Note that new Siri features are not yet available in Germany. The developer beta is available now following the June 8-12 event.
