Framework is investigating reports that BIOS version 3.20 can render the Framework Laptop 13 with AMD Ryzen 7040 Series unbootable. The company confirmed to Ars Technica that a small percentage of updates result in non-bootable boards across various methods.
The update, which remains available as a stable download, includes AMD PhoenixPI 1.2.0.0f and audio fixes. While known issues list USB-C and display bugs, they omit the bricking risk. Some users have recovered systems via battery discharge or external flashing.
Framework is replacing affected mainboards under warranty and making exceptions for out-of-warranty devices. To prevent future hardware swaps, the company is developing a Crisis Recovery Mode to restore failed BIOS updates without requiring new components.
