Microsoft announced a new disc-to-digital initiative for Xbox Insiders on August 31st, allowing users to convert physical game discs into digital licenses. This move comes as industry giants like Pioneer and Sony have already exited the disc drive market.
While Microsoft facilitates this transition, Sony continues to operate factories for PS5 disc printing despite ending optical drive production in 2013. Currently, Sony has not introduced a similar digital conversion alternative for its PlayStation ecosystem.
The shift precedes the next console generation, including Microsoft's Project Helix and the rival PS6. With Blu-ray recorder shipments plummeting and predicted console prices exceeding $1,000, the industry is rapidly moving toward a digital-only future.
