Reddit modder u/PhyFawkes has unveiled the SteamBoy, a custom handheld built from a Steam Deck LCD. The project repurposes the original motherboard, daughter boards, controller boards, and battery, stacking them into a unique vertical sandwich configuration.
The SteamBoy features a 1200x1080p AMOLED panel sourced from a VR headset, alongside stock ABXY buttons, a single trackpad, and one thumb stick. Cooling is managed by a 30mm AliExpress fan on a 3D-printed bracket and a small copper heat sink for the APU.
To maintain stable temperatures and performance, the device requires a -50 mV undervolt on both the CPU and GPU. While the hardware is integrated, the SteamBoy currently only functions when connected to an external display rather than its internal screen.
