NVIDIA Blackwell Hotspot Issues Found via MODS

NVIDIA's Blackwell GPUs face thermal throttling at 107°C, a hotspot metric currently unreadable by standard Windows diagnostic tools.

NVIDIA's Blackwell-based GeForce RTX 50 series contains a functional hotspot sensor that standard Windows tools like HWINFO64 and GPU-Z cannot currently read. Using NVIDIA's internal Modular Diagnostics Software (MODS), Paulo Gomes and his team analyzed a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti featuring a GB203-300 GPU. While standard tools reported a primary temperature of 68°C, the MODS tool revealed a GPU hotspot temperature of 106°C. Blackwell GPUs are programmed to throttle once the hotspot reaches 107°C, meaning performance drops can occur even when reported temperatures appear low at 68°C. These high hotspot readings are often caused by poor contact between the GPU and the cooler or insufficiently dimensioned cooling solutions. Although the hardware sensor is present and functional, users currently rely on specialized tools like MODS to identify these critical thermal limits.
