Researchers synchronized 105,000 nano-oscillators in 45 nanoseconds, a 1000x scale-up for potential Ising machine applications.

Scientists have successfully synchronized a grid of 105,000 nano-oscillators in just 45 nanoseconds, representing a nearly 1000-fold increase over previous demonstrations of 64 oscillators. Utilizing magnets measuring 10-20 nm across, the experiment leveraged the inherent spin of the magnets to achieve rapid synchronization. While 100 oscillators synchronized in 10 nanoseconds, the time only rose to 45 nanoseconds for the full 105,000-oscillator array. These grids, which can operate at frequencies of tens of GHz with a quality factor exceeding one million, are capable of implementing Ising machines and reservoir computing. Programming is achieved by manipulating oscillator frequencies, phases, and coupling strengths, with results read by measuring how the grid settles into a synchronized state.
