Apple Eyes Chinese Memory Chips Amid US Scrutiny

Apple is evaluating memory sources from Chinese vendors CXMT and YMTC to mitigate supply constraints, with plans to use the components only in devices sold within China. The company is currently testing DRAM products from CXMT, a firm on a Pentagon blacklist due to alleged ties to the People's Liberation Army. According to the Financial Times, Apple lobbied the Trump administration for clearance to purchase from CXMT, while Mark Gurman reports the company is working with officials to minimize political blowback. However, a group of US lawmakers has called on Apple to abandon these plans, demanding a commitment by August 21. The lawmakers also requested that Apple disclose any technical information shared with the Chinese firms during the evaluation process.
