Sony PS5 Sales Drop as Prices Rise and Profits Surge

Sony reports a 37% profit increase despite falling PS5 sales, driven by customs refunds and ahead of the November 19 GTA 6 release.

Sony's first-quarter results show PlayStation 5 sales fell to 1.6 million units from 2.5 million a year prior, bringing total shipments to 95.3 million since June 2020. Despite lower hardware demand and a 900,000-unit drop in first-party game shipments, profits rose 37% to 54.1 billion Yen. This growth was fueled by US customs duty refunds, which Sony retained, and favorable exchange rates. Prices for the PS5 and PS5 Pro increased by 100 Euro in April 2026, making the console up to 200 Euro more expensive than at its 2020 launch. While third-party game sales grew and PlayStation Network active users reached 125 million, Sony has already secured memory components for fiscal 2026. Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for a November 19 launch.
