Valve Funds AMD RADV Driver Port to Windows

Valve is sponsoring Collabora to port the open-source AMD RADV Vulkan driver to Windows, offering an alternative to official drivers.

Valve is funding the development of the open-source AMD RADV driver for Windows, with Collabora performing the actual porting work. Originally part of the Mesa 3D graphics library and the default for many AMD-powered Linux systems, RADV is optimized for Vulkan games and software. According to a Collabora blog post, Valve sponsored the first phase of this project, which has already successfully run Counter-Strike 2. This initiative addresses limitations in the current AMD Windows kernel-mode driver, which contains opaque code blobs and lacks public troubleshooting tools or documentation. Furthermore, the official Windows user-mode and kernel-mode drivers ship as matched pairs without backward-compatibility guarantees. Collabora has made the project's progress available on GitLab, providing a transparent alternative to existing proprietary solutions.
