PC gamer Jibril-sama has developed a unique Steam Game Cartridge system utilizing 2.5-inch SATA SSDs as physical media. The hardware setup features a SATA dock and 128GB SSDs purchased for approximately $8 each, housed in colorful cases with custom labels. Running on Linux, the system employs a udev rule to detect drive insertion, triggering a systemd template that executes a script on the SSD. This script leverages Valve's Steam URL Protocol to automatically navigate to or launch specific titles. While Steam still manages updates for games flagged on the cartridges, the creator primarily uses the system for replayable titles rather than live service games. This DIY project combines physical media nostalgia with modern digital library management through automated disk mounting and execution.
