The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking has announced the LUMI AI Factory, a new supercomputing facility at the CSC IT Center for Science in Kajaani, Finland. Scheduled for 2027, the project involves a 387.8 million euro investment for hardware and maintenance.
The system utilizes water-cooled BullSequana XH3500 architecture featuring AMD Epyc Venice processors with 256 cores and AMD Instinct MI430X accelerators. IBM provides storage, while Nokia and Bull manage the 23-megawatt, hydro-powered network infrastructure.
Financed equally by EuroHPC and a multi-national consortium, the project is part of a 650 million euro budget including a quantum computer. It marks a major step in the EU's 10 billion euro plan to establish seven AI Gigafactories across the continent.
