OpenAI Plans Screenless Smart Speaker for 2027
OpenAI is developing a screenless mobile smart speaker powered by GPT-Live, with a planned 2026 presentation and 2027 market launch.
OpenAI is expanding its hardware portfolio with a screenless mobile smart speaker featuring a camera, sensors, and an integrated battery for portability. Described by Bloomberg as a physical embodiment of ChatGPT, the device utilizes the GPT-Live AI model for simultaneous listening and speaking, enabling it to answer questions, control smart homes, and process messages proactively. The speaker includes moving elements for a natural appearance and is one of five hardware products in development, following the July announcement of the Codex Micro macro pad. This push into hardware includes the July 2025 integration of Jony Ive’s company, io, with Ive providing creative direction. However, the expansion faces legal hurdles as Apple is suing OpenAI for allegedly using trade secrets to develop its own devices.
