DIY 3D-Printed Steam Machine Shell Replaces dbrand

After Valve blocked dbrand's Companion Cube project, a creator released a DIY 3D-printed case for the $1,049 Steam Machine console.

Following Valve's legal threat against dbrand for unlicensed use of intellectual property, Printables user Jaron has released a DIY 3D-printed version of the Steam Machine Companion Cube Case. dbrand cancelled its project on November 12 despite thousands of hours of development. The new DIY shell, designed from scratch using images of dbrand's design, is compatible with single-extruder 3D printers using filament swaps and specific slicer settings for multi-color panels. The project utilizes Sunlu and Overture filaments and requires magnets, screws, and a soldering iron for assembly. Jaron confirmed the design does not block vents and includes an additional faceplate vent. The $1,049 Steam Machine, launched in June 2026, features an AMD Zen 4 six-core chip, RDNA3 graphics, and 16GB of DDR5 RAM. This unofficial project uses no game assets.
