NVIDIA Launches RTX Remix 1.5 with Storage Gains

NVIDIA's RTX Remix 1.5 update introduces a new storage system and Smooth Normals to streamline remastering and reduce game file sizes.

NVIDIA has released RTX Remix 1.5, an updated framework for remastering classic games with full ray tracing, DLSS 4 neural rendering, and generative AI material enhancement. This version introduces a storage system that reduces file sizes by approximately one-third, alongside Smooth Normals for automatic smooth-normal generation on legacy geometry. The update also adds viewpoint-based lighting control and enhances RTX IO storage technology, which offloads tasks from the CPU to the GPU using improved compression algorithms. These optimizations significantly impact installation sizes for titles like Portal with RTX, which dropped from 25 GB to 17 GB, and Half-Life 2 RTX, which decreased from 80 GB to 50 GB. The updated compression also supports Portal: Prelude RTX.
